METHODS FOR PREDICTING OVULATION
Cervical position
As ovulation approaches, the cervix rises, and the muscle softens and opens to let sperm pass. At peak fertility, the cervix's opening is about 1.5 centimeters wide. After ovulation, the cervix drops, and the muscle is firm and closed. In fact, the cervix is so low, you can touch it.
Mittelschmerz
Mittelschmerz is lower abdominal discomfort caused by ovulation. Only 20 percent of women experience mittelschmerz, which can range from mild aches to twinges of pain that can last from a few minutes to a few hours.
Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)
Ovulation predictor kits spot an increase in luteinizing hormone (LH), which prompts ovulation, twenty-four to thirty-six hours before ovulation. They're available without a prescription at drugstores and grocery stores, and they usually cost fifteen to fifty dollars. OPKs are easier to use and often more accurate than charting your BBT. For maximum accuracy, follow the kit's instructions exactly.
Sexual Intercourse
Charting your body's monthly changes helps you predict ovulation and schedule a window of time during which sexual intercourse will most likely result in pregnancy. With the help of fertile cervical mucus, sperm can live for six days (usually two to three days) inside the uterus and fallopian tubes, but an egg can't survive more than one day after ovulation. This means that if you have sex often during the five days before ovulation and one day afterward, you increase your chances of conceiving.
